Frequently Asked Questions

Are your coffees Certified Organic?

Certified Organic coffees are grown intentionally without the use of pesticides or herbicides. A third-party certifier is hired to monitor the growing and often assists the farmer in carrying out the most cost effective and socially responsible methods of producing their crop. All of our coffees AND teas are Certified Organic. To learn more, check out our Organic page.

Are your coffees Certified FairTrade?

Certified FairTrade Coffees change the way trade works through better prices, decent working conditions, and a fairer deal for farmers and workers in partnering countries. FairTrade connects producers, businesses, and consumers in a global system of sustainable, ethical trade. A majority of our coffees are Certified FairTrade. To learn more, check out our Sustainability page.

How often are your coffees roasted?

Our coffees are roasted on a daily basis, ensuring some of the freshest beans make their way to you! To learn more, check out our Roasting page!

What is the roast level and taste profile?

Roasting is a heat process that turns 'green coffee' into fragrant, dark brown beans. Roasting brings out the aroma and flavor that is locked inside the green coffee beans. Roasting is both an art and a science - a matter of seconds is the difference between perfection and destruction. We roast all our coffees to enhance the unique qualities already existing in the green coffee beans before a roast, so each coffee is roasted a bit different than another. Lighter roast levels tend to indicate fruitier and brighter tasting notes. Darker roast levels tend to indicate a fuller-body with bolder tasting notes. Like any kind of organic produce, no coffee is the same. The best way to determine the differences that matter most to you is to take the time to brew a pot of each roast to see which qualities stand out about them. Don't think you have to pick a side - you'd be surprised what comes through in each coffee.

All tasting/flavor notes listed are naturally present in the coffee bean itself and proper roasting helps to bring them out. Similar to how wines have different flavor notes based on the grape varietals and the regions where they are grown. Since we value organic standards so highly, we do not add any flavoring to our coffees. To guarantee the consistency of our roasts and these flavors, we have two certified Q-Graders here to cup and taste every batch off the roaster! To learn more, check out our Quality page!

How are your decafs processed?

Our decafs are Mountain Water processed. This is a very similar process to the Swiss Water in that they do not use harmful chemicals, only water. Mountain Water processing happens in Mexico using water from the highest mountain (Pico de Orizaba).

Are your coffees considered Bird-Friendly?

All of our coffee is 100% Certified Organic. This means they come from farmers and cooperatives who are dedicated to improving biodiversity on their farms. This also means many of our coffees are shade grown on small-scale farms. This helps to ensure the environments these coffees are produced are biodiverse as possible, offering a habitat for the birds and many other species.

To be Certified Bird-Friendly, we would have to recieve a certification from The Smithsonian Institute. Their current list of cooperatives with this accreditation is very limited. Given the number of cooperatives from around the world that we source coffee from, we aren't able to use their seal on our products.

What is the best way to prepare coffee?

Check out our Brew Guides to learn more.

Is your coffee Gluten Free? Dairy Free? Nut Free?

All of our coffees are gluten free, however, we are not a certified gluten free facility. There are no other products (i.e. nuts/dairy) roasted or processed in our facility.

How much caffeine is in your coffee?

The typical cup of brewed coffee (8oz size) will have an average of 95mg of caffeine (with a range of about 70-140 depending on where the coffee came from, varietal, etc). We have a variety of decaf coffees and herbal teas available in our offerings as well.
