What is Coffee Roasting?

Beans are shipped to us in a green state, because this is how it can best be stored without loss of quality and taste. Coffee is then roasted which is a heating process that turns the green coffee into fragrant dark brown beans. As it roasts, chemical changes take place as the beans are rapidly brought to very high temperatures. When they reach perfection, they are quickly cooled to stop the roasting process. Coffee roasting brings out the aroma and flavor that are locked deep inside the green coffee beans. Roasting is both an art and a science - a matter of seconds can be the difference between perfection and destruction. We roast all our coffees to enhance the unique qualities already existing in the green beans before they roast, so each coffee is roasted a bit different than another. We roast coffee daily, to ensure the freshest beans possible will make their way to you!

Loring Roasting Machines

We are constantly examining and reexamining every aspect of our business to make sure that we are operating in the most efficient and sustainable ways possible. When it came to assessing our roasters we knew at the very least we wanted two things; environmental efficiency and the capacity to produce wicked good coffee. We got more than we bargained for when we committed to three new roasters. The Loring Smart Roast is the dream machine. Using state-of-the-art technology and a unique Flavour-Lock Roasting Process, we are able to roast exceptional coffee for you and still be friendly to the environment. The Flavour-Lock process creates a closed loop roasting environment where the gas burner simultaneously super heats the spent air to incinerate the smoke and odor before they leave the roaster while also heating the clean air to the perfect temperature to roast great coffee. By multitasking the roasters burner, we no longer have to operate an afterburner. One burner instead of two means that we can reduce our energy consumption up to 80% all while we are reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. It's a win, win. The enclosed roasting system also creates an ideal, stable roasting environment that increases humidity and decreases oxygen that all adds up to a consistently flavorful and nuanced cup o'joe, which is the most important thing!

Silo System

Our state of the art Silo System is a game changer! This system took months to install but makes a significant difference in our roasting operations. Back when we first started, physically handling a 100+ lbs. of green coffee per roast into our roasters was standard practice. We are proud to say that as we have automized more to enhance the quality of work and efficiency of roasting, our silo system now allows the green coffee to be delivered directly to the roasters with a touch of a button. The silo system also comes with a pre-cleaner system that ensures further quality discernment between slightly under sized and over sized beans( mind you the premium green has been sorted through once or twice already). This cleaner also removes green coffee dust into a holding tank so particulates are not in the air. Once the beans have gone through their third or fourth clean they are automatically sent to one of the twelve storage silos that can hold up to 10,000 pounds. The prescribed recipe is then cued up on the roaster. When the roaster is ready, the system calls for the correct coffee in the appropriate weight allotments to be delivered directly to the roaster. No more hauling around beans and hand loading. We are so fortunate for this system that is helping us Get Wicked efficient at what we do!
